About Jim Reale
& Open Body Open Breath

Jim has been practicing and teaching yoga for 12 years. Over the last five years he has adapted yoga to complement Contemplative Prayer. He currently leads retreats nationally using the contemplative tools of prayerful movement, breath work, gesture and sacred chant as a vestibule into Contemplative Prayer.

Prayerful Movement
Prayerful Movement is a practice designed to open the body, increase awareness of the breath, calm the whirlings of the mind and reintroduce the element of simple chant with Christian meaning. All of this supports the method of Contemplative Prayer.

Open Body
Prayerful movement can help reduce the obstacles in the body that create discomfort and distraction. The emphasis on breath in combination with simple movement allows each person to move from an external to an internal experience.

Open Breath
Breathing is an integral part of prayerful movement. Breath is the link between body and mind. When the mind is agitated the breath will reflect this quality. If we take the time to calm the breath, the mind will follow.

Sacred Chant
Sacred Chant  Adopting language and concepts from the New Testament, Jim Reale has set these Christian themes to simple chant, creating a unique dimension in preparation for Contemplative Prayer.

Traditionally, the voice has been a vehicle to lift up one’s heart to God. Think of the call and response that is part of many services, or the inspired hymns that are sung both in the context of the church and spiritual communities.

Chanting has long had its roots in the monastic communities throughout the Christian world. From early on, the contemplatives recognized chanting as a way of expressing one’s faith and devotion.

These chants, composed in English and drawn primarily from the New Testament, are accessible to everyone, be they lay people or clergy. In an attempt to foster this way of relating to the Divine, the chants have been kept simple, using 3 to 4 tones. Many have found that they are easily learned in a short period of time and serve to draw us inward, moving us toward a place of quiet, intimacy, and healing.
